About Kalkalpen National Park

Kalkalpen National Park, located in the heart of the Northern Limestone Alps in Upper Austria, encompasses a rugged landscape of dense mixed forests, steep karst limestone ridges, and alpine meadows spanning over 20,000 hectares. The park protects an extensive old-growth forest ecosystem, predominantly made up of European beech, Norway spruce, and silver fir, which are largely undisturbed and form vital habitat for a rich variety of wildlife including Eurasian lynx, red deer, chamois, and numerous bird species such as the black woodpecker and capercaillie. Karst formations, caves, and crystal-clear streams add geological interest to the diverse terrain. Established in 1997, Kalkalpen offers a blend of intact natural environment with trails ranging from leisurely forest walks to challenging alpine hikes, including access to panoramic summits like the Großer Ödstein and Krumme Ries. Visitors are drawn to the park for its pristine wilderness, extensive network of marked hiking and mountain biking trails, educational visitor centers, and opportunities to engage with traditional mountain forestry culture. The park also has winter appeal for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing along gentle routes. With abundant wildlife sightings and quiet natural beauty, Kalkalpen National Park is a valuable refuge that exemplifies the success of European conservation efforts in preserving large natural forest landscapes.
